THE JOEL LETTERS: HOME PAGE BOY MAKES GOOD!
© 2006 by Joel

My Dear Friends:

Following Columbia Pictures founder Harry Cohen's well attended funeral, Red Skelton made his immortal comment, "Give the public what they want and they'll turn out." So many of you have expressed delight with my annual holiday newsletters that I thought I would give you more of what you want. Thanks to dear friends and Encouragers-in-Chief John and Mary Caris of San Francisco, at whose web address my writing can be found, we can have Christmas, Hanukkah and New Years all year round.

"Letters from Manhattan, the Berkshires and L.A.," as I will title my nine or so yearly missives, will be very much like the Joel, Lloyd and John holiday newsletters except that they will not include personal news and they will be written with my gloves off. My aim is to entertain, energize, inform, and occasionally shock and provoke my readers. Politics, religion, the performing arts, cultural trends and issues, my pet peeves and just about anything else that attracts my interest and, I hope, yours will be grist for the mill.

I plan to speak my piece, but I have no intention of getting personal or in any way hurting my readers. The best definition of a gentleman or gentlewoman is one who never makes another uncomfortable in their presence. I hope I can live up to that standard in person and in print. And now I'm going to let you in on a secret, sort of come out of the closet on something that I have never told a living soul. All my life, even as a little kid, I....I'VE NEVER BEEN WRONG. Not once! Don't laugh; with all that responsibility it hasn't been easy.

See what you've got yourself into? But you knew all about that when you took me on as a friend. I'll be thrilled if you get even a fraction of the enjoyment I am going to get writing these letters for you.
